2007-2008 Annual Report

Terre Haute Symphony League
2008 - Year in Review
Report to the League and to the THSO Board

The Terre Haute Symphony League worked very hard this year, and as our fiscal year ends, I would like to quickly review for you our activities and our accomplishments.
One of our first tasks was to arrange for cookies for Orchestra rehearsals. Our thanks to Norma Beymer, our Hospitality Chairperson, who lined up all the cookie donations, and to all of those who baked or provided the cookies and peanuts.
We then geared up for our project of Food Sales for the Concert in the Park, Sept. 9th. Linda Sturtevant volunteered to chair that effort and did a great job. We tried out a new location and an expanded menu; and, although the proceeds we not as good as we had hoped, we did clear $472 and we learned a lot. Thanks to Linda and all who helped in any way, especially Cathy Davis, who, along with Linda, spent a lot of time over a hot grill on a hot day.
Linda helped us out again as Chairperson of Non-Fundraising Events, in arranging for our participation in Family Learning Day, Sept.22, at the Vigo Co. Public Library. We had a “Petting Zoo” of instruments provided by the Conservatory of Music and gave away “Symphony” candy bars, and books with a music lesson plot provided by the library & donated by Altrusa.  Our thanks again to Linda and all those who helped her, and also to the music students who helped the children with the instruments.
Our work on the Bank Decorating project began last January when we began collecting musical instruments at the “after-Christmas sales. We decorated on Nov. 27th and thought we had a 1st prize winning entry for sure with the help of Louise Myers & her decorating talents. Unfortunately, we were “robbed” by the judges who only awarded us “Honorable Mention” and $400, but again it was a learning experience and great publicity for the Symphony. Our thanks to our Fund-Raising Events Chair, JoAnne Rowe, who oversaw the project.  Frances Miller who chaired the tree decorating, Jo Brown, who chaired the teller cages decorations, to Evelyn DiLavore who chaired the Judges Refreshments, and to Louise Myers. We are going to try again next year! Jacque Trinler will chair the project.
Our planning for our bazaar fundraiser also began early with JoAnne, Fund-Raising Chair,  hosting craft sessions in her home last summer. Our Sounds of the Season Bazaar and Candy Cane Café was held December 7th & 8th at the Girl Scout Building.  JoAnne was Chair for the Bazaar and Jacque Trinler chaired the Café. We had about 16 crafters who participated on a % basis. Once again our profits were not as good as we had hoped. We would have liked more customers & those who did shop weren’t hungry, but we did clear $1011. Many members helped with that project in some way and our Publicity Chair, Jean Eyster got us great TV publicity and coverage. Thanks to all who contributed items or helped in any way.
Our Christmas Luncheon was held at the Bit O’ Britain Tea Room on December 13th.with a wonderful & amazing program by Handbell Soloist, Anne Bunch. Our thanks to Norma Beymer, our Hospitality Chair, who made all  of the arrangements.
Our next event was the THSO Children’s Concert on April 18th, for which we helped to usher and provide refreshments for the orchestra. Our special thanks to Eva Hopp who kept our list of volunteers and made reminder calls to them.
Our final project for the year is still going on and with great success. Our Spring Fundraising Luncheons began May 8th and will continue through June 30th.JoAnne Rowe, our Fund-Raising Events Chair. Has done a great job of getting hostesses, co-hostesses, and getting all the luncheons filled to capacity.. We should clear at least $2,600, possibly more.
Thanks to JoAnne and all of our hostesses and co-hostesses.  (Some of whom aren’t even League members, but are good friends of the Symphony).  A letter of thanks was sent to all of the hostesses.
Our Spring Luncheon – Installation of Officers was held June 6th at the Farrington Bed & Breakfast with a great turn out and a delicious lunch. At that meeting we voted to present a check from League to the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra in the amount of $3,500. In addition, League will buy a page of advertising in the 2008-09 Season program for $650.

League’s 2008-09 officers installed were:
President _ Gretchen Jennermann
Vice President – Katherine Culver
Secretary – Cathy Davis
Treasurer – Jacque Trinler

It’s been an interesting, exciting, event-filled year, and personally very rewarding year for me. – Thanks to all of you for making it happen!

Respectfully submitted,

Jacquelyn Trinler, 2007-08 League President
