THSO Introduces New Chamber Concert Series
The Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra is excited to re-launch their THSO Presents! series featuring members of the THSO for intimate performances of some of the world's greatest chamber music. On October 16, 2021 and March 5, 2022, enjoy several of the most passionate, riveting, and moving musical works ever written for small ensembles. Performances on October 16 and March 5 take place at Hatfield Hall on the campus of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology beginning at 4pm.
Audiences will experience firsthand the collaborative spontaneity that makes chamber ensembles some of the most exciting to watch. Programs will feature brass quintets, woodwind quintets, string quartets, and more.
Sharon Weyser, Second Horn with the THSO, notes, “After 11 years as a member of the THSO, I am so thankful that our new Executive Director Samantha Johnson-Helms has worked to create this chamber music concert series. This series provides the musicians of the THSO a new opportunity to connect with and perform for the Terre Haute community. I am excited to be a part of this inaugural series and look forward to more performances like this in the years to come!” Weyser will perform with the Pontoon Boat Brass quintet on the October 16 program featuring works by Giovanni Gabrieli and Ludwig Maurer. THSO members of this group include Second Horn Sharon Weyser and Principal Trumpet Jay Ellsmore.
The THSO is also pleased to welcome the award-winning woodwind quintet Volante Winds to Terre Haute for the series. THSO Principal Oboe Rebecca McGuire and THSO Second Bassoon Sara Fruehe are founding members of the ensemble. THSO Fourth Horn Layne Anspach will join the group to sub for founding member Olivier Huebscher.
The grouped noted, “Volante Winds is excited to share our love of chamber music with the Terre Haute community! Chamber music is a beautiful opportunity to bring us all together again after being apart for 18 months. We are so thrilled to connect with live audiences again!”
Now in their 6th Season, Volante Winds has received high acclaim in the field of chamber music for their "beautiful sound", "perfect ensemble", and "excellent, mature poise." The quintet has performed in competitions and festivals throughout the world, with recent residencies at the American Music Festival in North Carolina, Juneau Jazz and Classics Festival in Alaska, and the Jeju International Wind Ensemble Festival in South Korea. Volante Winds will perform Wind Quintet, Op. 79 composed by August Klughardt to close the October 16 program. To learn more about Volante Winds, visit www.volantewinds.com.
The THSO’s new Principal Flute and ISU Flute Professor, Angela Reynolds, will also perform on October 16 alongside retired Principal Keyboard Martha Krasnican. The flute and piano duo will present Ian Clarke’s Deep Blue, a beautiful work inspired by the ocean and whale song, and Gabriel Faure’s Fantasie, Op. 79.
The October 16 program will also feature a Baroque string trio performing Gaetano Brunetti’s Divertimento Terzo in C Major, L. 147. Members include Acting Principal Viola Esteban Hernández Parra, THSO Violinist Shelby Mass, and THSO Cellist Kevin Flynn.
Flynn noted his Baroque string trio will perform the Brunetti on period instruments with real gut strings and Baroque era bows, just like those Brunetti would have known in the late 18th century. “We're working hard to prepare our period performance for THSO patrons and the Terre Haute community, and we are looking forward to sharing great music in a more intimate (in-person!) setting.”
Platinum ticket holders for THSO Presents! concerts will receive an invitation to enjoy a complimentary reception following the concert and an opportunity to meet our world class musicians. The concert will last approximately 75 minutes without an intermission. Tickets are $15 (silver), $32 (gold), and $48 (platinum) and can be purchased at thso.org or by calling Hatfield Hall at (812) 877-8544. Prices do not include facility and venue fees.
