Terre Haute Symphony Announces 2021-2022 Season, Disney in Concert Returns to Terre Haute
The Terre Haute Symphony is thrilled to announce their 96th Season titled Sights, Sounds & Stories, complete with the return of Disney in Concert to the Tilson Auditorium stage! The THSO’s 2021-2022 season is guaranteed to be filled to the brim with wonderful stories, beautiful music, and world-class guest artists. Enhanced guest experience will be a topic of focus for the THSO during the upcoming season with the plan to include more visual elements and projections to supplement the film and movie season theme.
“Our plan is to include scenes or visual projections in Tilson that complement the musical programming and give our audiences a unique and enjoyable concert experience,” commented Samantha Johnson-Helms, Executive Director and Principal Clarinet.
Artistic Director and Conductor David Bowden also expressed his excitement about the new season. “As I enter my 25th season with the THSO, I am delighted to offer spectacular music that I believe will appeal to the first-time concert attender as well as to the seasoned concert-goer. I invite you to come hear this fabulous professional musical ensemble that plays all styles of music and that is located right here in Terre Haute! And we have a great first-time season subscriber offer to help make the experience affordable for everyone.”
The THSO’s 96th season kicks off on September 25, 2021 with Scheherazade’s Stories which includes Rimsky-Korsakov’s brilliantly colorful Scheherazade, Ravel’s Mother Goose Suite, Wagner’s famous Flight of the Valkyries, and the recognizable Raiders March from the movie Indiana Jones by John Williams. Rimsky-Korsakov brilliantly represents Scheherazade and the tales she told in his piece filled with orchestral color and virtuosity, forging it as one of the most compelling and exciting works ever written!
On November 6, 2021, the THSO presents Brahms & Beach and will welcome cellist Leonardo Altino and violinist Soh-Hyun Park Altino for Brahms’s Double Concerto, a piece that was written by Brahms to repair a strained friendship. Also on the program is Amy Beach’s superb “Gaelic” Symphony, the first symphony published by a female American composer. Amy Beach was an extraordinary woman. In a time when women rarely considered a music career, Amy was one of the greatest composers in our country. Her “Gaelic” Symphony is filled to the brim with passion, power, beauty, and lyrical melodies.
The THSO’s annual holiday performance, titled Candlelit Holidays, will take place on December 4, 2021. This beloved annual tradition embraces the season with holiday classics and enchanting music! Let the music of the season weave another magical memory for you and your family.
Arguably the most anticipated concert of the 2021-2022 season, the THSO is bringing your favorite Disney music back to Terre Haute on April 9, 2022! Come be enchanted by Disney in Concert Magical Music from the Movies with the THSO, conductor Dr. David Bowden, projected video clips from iconic Disney films, and four leading vocalists. Every new generation has a favorite Disney musical, whether it’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, The Lion King, or Frozen. And then there are the classics, from a Mary Poppins medley to the “Yo ho” of Pirates of the Caribbean. When everyone joins together for memorable moments and melodies that Mouseketeers of all ages know by heart, it feels like a small world, after all. On April 30, 2022, the THSO presents Rach 2 with Di Wu. Displaying tenderness, lyricism, power, and a charming charisma, Di Wu returns to Terre Haute to perform Rachmaninoff’s Second Piano Concerto, considered by many to be the world’s favorite piano concerto. The concert opens with a favorite work composed by Dan Powers, Overture for the THSO, the Symphony’s Composer-in-Residence, and concludes with Brahms’s astonishingly powerful Symphony No. 1.
The THSO also plans to continue virtual offerings including concert recordings and online education programs with the help of a generous grant from the Wabash Valley Community Foundation. Follow the THSO on YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram to catch up on their latest video uploads!
As pandemic conditions allow, the THSO will bring back their popular Supper at the Symphony events that take place in the Heritage Ballroom of Tirey Hall prior to all concerts at Tilson Auditorium. These popular and well-attended dinners feature a three-course catered meal and Concert Conversations hosted by Artistic Director, David Bowden, and concert guest artists.
