Terre Haute Symphony League Hosts Artistry in Sound Fundraiser for THSO at Swope Art Museum
On Sunday April 14, 2024, at 2:00pm, the Terre Haute Symphony Leagues will share a unique fundraiser called Artistry in Sound featuring a musical recital performed by the Angelus Duo (harp and flute) centered around Paul Jenkins’ painting Phenomena Near Baber Woods on display at The Swope Art Museum. Attendees will be able to view the painting as they listen to the Angelus Duo’s carefully programmed performance. The peak of the recital will showcase the world-premiere of “…yet so close” written by Terre Haute native and award-winning composer Jack Nesser. Nesser’s original composition is inspired by Jenkins’ painting and shares a musical reflection of the artwork. Hors d’oeuvres and a cash bar catered by The Saratoga will be available starting at 2pm. The performance will start at 2:30pm and last until 3:30pm. Attendees will have the opportunity to meet the musicians and composer following the performance until 4pm. This event will take place on the Third Floor of The Swope Art Museum.

About Paul Jenkins
The paintings of Paul Jenkins (1923 – 2012) have come to represent the spirit, vitality, and invention of post World War II American abstraction. Employing an unorthodox approach to paint application, Jenkins is as much identified with the process of controlled paint-pouring and canvas manipulation as with the gem-like veils of transparent and translucent color which have characterized his work since the late 1950s. Born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri in 1923, Jenkins later moved to Youngstown, Ohio. Drawn to New York, he became a student of Yasuo Kuniyoshi at the Art Students League and ultimately became associated with the Abstract Expressionists, inspired in part by the "cataclysmic challenge of Pollock and the total metaphysical consumption of Mark Tobey." An ongoing interest in Eastern religions and philosophy, the study of the I Ching, along with the writings of Carl Gustav Jung prompted Jenkins' turn toward inward reflection and mysticism which have dominated his aesthetic as well as his life.
