Registration for THSO’s Annual Adventures in Music Concert Now Open
[Terre Haute, IN] – Registration is now open for private schools, non-Vigo County public schools, and homeschools for the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra’s annual educational concert, Adventures in Music! This year’s performance will take place on April 6th at 11am at Tilson Auditorium on Indiana State University’s campus. The 45-minute concert aims to educate 4th grade level students about the instruments of the orchestra and their instrumental families. Students in 4th grade from Vigo County Schools annually attend the 9:30am performance of the program.
“We are grateful to the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra for providing such a wonderful experience for all VCSC 4th grade students. This concert enriches our elementary music program by providing children the opportunity to experience performing arts in our very own community. We are so excited to be able to attend this event in person this year!”, commented Karen McDonald, Assistant Director of Adult Education and Music for Vigo County School Corporation.
Public schools, private schools, and homeschool students are invited to join in learning about the magic of music from THSO conductor and artistic director Dr. David Bowden and the THSO’s talented musicians. Students will learn how each specific instrument fits in its instrumental family and how the families work together in the orchestra. Plus, they’ll get a look at how the music would sound if a family of instruments were omitted. The primary objective of this program is to encourage students to consider learning to play an instrument and to “make music” by participating with others in school, church, and community ensembles when offered the opportunity.
“Learning the skill of making music is transformative for a child,” said David Bowden, Artistic Director of the THSO. “Making music enriches a child’s life, trains the brain to learn, and teaches a multitude of life skills. Every child should have opportunity to ‘make music.’ Music is for everyone.”
This performance will feature pieces that are familiar to students, such as excerpts from John Williams’s Star Wars score, as well as classic pieces students may not have heard before, like Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik. The program will also include A Patriotic Singalong to involve the students in the making of music.
The THSO passionately believes making music changes lives. The 2022 THSO Adventures in Music concert promises to be a very enjoyable and engaging educational experience that you will not want your students to miss!
There is no admission fee for this concert. Sponsorships and grants are sought to cover the substantial costs of the professional musicians who perform for the children. All principals, teachers, assistants, and other adult chaperones attending will also be admitted free of charge. This year’s concert is generously supported by The Hometown Savings Bank and the Indiana Chemical Trust.
Teachers are invited to register online at www.thso.org/education. Registration closes March 16, 2022.
