Terre Haute Symphony Performs Heroism & Hope November 2
On November 2, 2024, at 7:30pm, the Terre Haute Symphony Orchestra will share an emotional performance with Heroism & Hope featuring conductor David Bowden. The program includes Shostakovich’s jubilant Festive Overture, Brahm’s beautiful Symphony No. 3, and Shostakovich’s powerful Symphony No. 5.
Shostakovich’s Festive Overture is a vibrant, fast-paced piece for large orchestra that is known for its catchy melodies and orchestra virtuosity. The music of Brahms is David Bowden’s specialty, and this will be the last Brahms you will hear David conduct as Artistic Director. It is a work of emotional depth and overwhelming power. Written as Stalin’s Great Terror campaign made music a matter of life and death for Soviet composers, Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony is a searing search for hope and a courageous personal statement in a time of darkness and oppression.
This concert is proudly sponsored by Union Health, the Terre Haute Symphony League, Fireplace World, Old National Bank, and Bill Mitchell and Denise Marie Sobieski in memory of James Sobieski. This concert is also made possible in part by Arts Illiana, the Indiana Arts Commission, a state agency, and the National Endowment for the Arts, a federal agency.
